Art
Art, Craft and Design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity.
A high-quality Art and Design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to explore, experiment, invent and create their own works of Art, Craft and Design.
Intent
At Hunslet Moor Primary School, the curriculum ensures all pupils can succeed regardless of their starting points. Art and Design is inclusive and valued as a vital part of a broad and balanced curriculum, supporting creativity, curiosity, self-expression, resilience and confidence. The subject plays an important role in developing communication skills, fine motor skills and supporting pupils with SEMH needs through sensory experiences. Art and Design helps children understand themselves and their potential while contributing to their emotional, aesthetic, spiritual, intellectual and social development. Through high-quality teaching and rich opportunities, pupils are encouraged to develop skills, express individual ideas and explore personal interests. We are proud that our Art and Design curriculum inspires all children to achieve and thrive.
Implementation
The Art and Design curriculum at Hunslet Moor Primary School is based on the National Curriculum and is carefully planned to ensure clear progression from Nursery to Year 6. Art is taught through topic links where appropriate, as well as through skill-focused and artist-focused units that allow children to explore a wide range of techniques, materials and tools. Pupils develop skills in drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, printmaking and design, supported by sketchbook work and the study of local, national and international artists. Learning is enriched through activities such as a whole-school Arts Week, educational visits and opportunities for collaborative work, helping to inspire future aspirations. Teaching includes a balance of direct instruction, individual and group work, with an emphasis on exploring ideas, evaluating and critiquing work and developing confidence in personal expression. Demonstrating inclusivity, lessons are differentiated to meet the needs of all learners, ensuring every child can access and succeed in Art and Design.
