Curriculum

Maths

At Hunslet Moor we believe that all children should be given the opportunity to achieve their true potential, taking into account the importance of meeting the needs of each individual child’s learning, and their social and emotional needs.

Intent

At Hunslet Moor Primary School, all children are supported to achieve their full potential, with attention to individual learning, social, and emotional needs. The school aims for pupils to love Maths and develop secure mathematical understanding that will support them in daily life and future careers. The curriculum follows the National Curriculum for Mathematics to ensure a structured, rich learning experience with clear progression of skills. Teaching is designed to help children become confident mathematicians, prepare for secondary school, and apply mathematical knowledge in real-life situations. Daily lessons focus on developing fluency across all areas of the curriculum, providing opportunities to reason mathematically, and applying skills to increasingly complex problem-solving. Through this approach, pupils build the confidence and competence to succeed both academically and beyond school.

Implementation

At Hunslet Moor Primary School, quality first teaching, effective modelling, and ongoing assessment ensure all children are supported and challenged in their mathematics learning. Maths is taught daily from EYFS to Year 6, with KS1 and KS2 classes providing at least one hour per day, combining teacher-led and adult-led activities. The curriculum is adapted from White Rose planning to meet children’s needs, ensuring progression, retention, and full coverage of the National Curriculum, with prior knowledge used to build skills year on year. Children develop fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving through differentiated lessons, memory grids, collaborative work, and peer or self-assessment, with interventions and after-school tuition provided where needed. Engagement is enhanced through resources like Times Table Rock Stars, calculation starters, and classroom working walls displaying key vocabulary and modelled examples. In EYFS, mathematical understanding is embedded through play and everyday routines, covering number, shape, space, and measures in meaningful and purposeful contexts.

Impact

At Hunslet Moor Primary School, the teaching and learning of mathematics is designed to ensure good or better progress for all pupils, relative to their individual starting points. The curriculum follows a well-planned sequence that develops and refines mathematical skills, preparing children to leave school at least at the expected standard for their age. Success is seen when children master concepts, demonstrate understanding in multiple ways, use mathematical language to reason and explain, and apply knowledge independently to new problems. Pupils develop quick recall of facts and procedures, including times tables, and show flexibility in applying mathematics across different contexts and representations. They are encouraged to recognise relationships, make connections, and build confidence and resilience in their learning. A strong emphasis is placed on pride in the presentation and understanding of their work.
