Curriculum

Physical Education (PE)

At Hunslet Moor Primary School, our PE curriculum provides children with high quality physical education, including a range of sports, physical activities and enriching experiences to encourage a healthy, active lifestyle.

Intent

At Hunslet Moor Primary School, the PE curriculum provides high-quality physical education through a wide range of sports, activities and enriching experiences that promote healthy, active lifestyles. The curriculum is designed to give children the breadth, depth and ambition needed for future success and lifelong participation in physical activity. Pupils develop fundamental movement skills alongside sport-specific skills and tactics in line with the National Curriculum. Learning is enhanced through competitive opportunities, sporting visitors, tournaments, sports days and a variety of lunchtime and after-school activities. All physical activity opportunities are inclusive and accessible to every child, including those who are SEND or disadvantaged. Through PE, we aim to foster a love of sport while developing teamwork, confidence and the skills needed to become active, capable participants and competitors.

Implementation

At Hunslet Moor Primary School, PE is delivered using the online resource The PE Hub to ensure lessons are well-structured, sequenced and consistent across the school. Teachers are supported with detailed planning that includes prior knowledge, key vocabulary and skills, lesson structure, key questions and assessment for learning. Pupils receive two one-hour PE lessons each week, including both indoor and outdoor sessions, and attend school in their PE kits. Physical activity is further promoted through iMoves, active playtimes and lunchtime activities, as well as a range of after-school sports clubs. Sports rotate each term in line with the school’s long-term plan. Each unit begins with a theory-based lesson to develop pupils’ understanding of rules, tactics, strategies, movement, health and participation.

Impact

At Hunslet Moor Primary School, the PE curriculum is progressive, enabling children to develop fundamental skills and apply them across a wide range of sports and activities. All pupils are given equal opportunities to be physically active, supporting both their health and their learning in the classroom. Children learn the importance of exercise and how to lead a healthy lifestyle, with physical activity having a strong and enjoyable presence throughout school life. The school encourages pupils to continue being active beyond school and to develop a lifelong love of sport. Assessment takes place regularly within lessons, with teaching differentiated week by week to meet pupils’ needs and provide appropriate challenge. Summative assessment is completed using Sonar, measuring progress against National Curriculum objectives, including swimming in Year 5.
