PSHE
Our inspirational Personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) curriculum develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills which will enable children to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a global citizen now and in their future roles within a global community.
Intent
At Hunslet Moor Primary School, we aim for pupils to leave with the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to play an active, positive role in a diverse and changing society. We encourage high aspirations, self-belief and an understanding that effort and resilience can lead to success. The curriculum supports pupils’ mental health and well-being by helping them understand the world around them and how to respond to its challenges. Learning is knowledge- and vocabulary-rich, ensuring access to a broad and balanced curriculum. Our PSHE curriculum equips pupils with essential skills and understanding to engage with the wider curriculum and become responsible global citizens. Relationships and Sex Education further supports pupils in learning how to stay safe and develop healthy, respectful relationships now and in the future.
Implementation
At Hunslet Moor Primary School, PSHE is taught progressively from EYFS to Year 6, with learning embedded across the curriculum and supported by the Jigsaw scheme of work. In EYFS, PSHE is integrated into topic work through Personal, Social and Emotional Development, while in Key Stages 1 and 2 it follows a clear, spiral curriculum covering health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, resilience, mental and physical health, and mindfulness, helping pupils to understand themselves and others. Relationships and Sex Education is delivered in an age-appropriate and inclusive way, reflecting the diversity of modern Britain and preparing children for future life. PSHE is closely linked to British Values, SMSC and the school’s ethos of mutual respect, ensuring pupils feel safe, valued and able to succeed. Learning is further enriched through visitors, assemblies, displays and opportunities for pupils to contribute positively to school life and the wider community.
Impact
By the time children leave Hunslet Moor Primary School, they will be equipped to apply their skills and attributes to real-life situations in modern society. They will be developing into healthy, open-minded, respectful and socially responsible individuals who value difference and diversity. Pupils will understand and apply British Values, including democracy, tolerance, mutual respect, the rule of law and individual liberty. They will be able to recognise and manage their emotions, supporting positive mental health and well-being. Children will develop positive, healthy relationships and gain an age-appropriate understanding of Relationships and Sex Education. Overall, they will leave with strong self-respect, respect for others and a positive sense of self-esteem.
