Curriculum

Religious Education (RE)

It is our intention that when Children leave Hunslet Moor Primary, they will do so with the knowledge and understanding that will allow them to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s divers society.

Intent

At Hunslet Moor Primary School, Religious Education (RE) aims to equip pupils with the knowledge, understanding and skills to play an active, positive role in today’s diverse society. The curriculum encourages high aspirations, self-belief, and the understanding that effort can lead to success, while fostering respect for and understanding of different beliefs and world views. RE supports community cohesion by promoting dialogue, resilience, and the ability to respond thoughtfully to misunderstanding, stereotyping, and division. Pupils explore challenging questions about meaning, purpose, morality, and human identity, learning from both religious and non-religious perspectives in local, national, and global contexts. The curriculum develops pupils’ abilities to interpret texts and sources of wisdom, express personal beliefs respectfully, and critically evaluate different viewpoints. Its intent is to investigate beliefs and practices, address questions of value and morality, encourage engaging enquiry, and provide a safe space for pupils to explore and reflect on “big questions” about life.

Implementation

At Hunslet Moor Primary School, RE teaching follows the agreed Leeds Syllabus, which structures learning around six key ‘pathways’ to develop a progressive understanding of religions and worldviews. Teaching aims to build rich, profound knowledge while being guided by the school’s DREAMS qualities: Determined learner, Reflective learner, Engaged learner, Articulate communicator, Managing my feelings, and Showing self and mutual respect. Units are planned around central “big questions,” with lessons designed to encourage meaningful engagement, debate, discussion, and real-life experiences. Learning is enriched through assemblies, celebrations of religious festivals and world events, and trips and visits. In the Foundation Stage, children explore religion through themes such as special people, books, places, times, thoughts, and things, linking to areas of development like Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design. In KS1 and KS2, RE teaching develops knowledge and understanding along the six pathways, ensuring subject-specific knowledge grows progressively and is appropriate to pupils’ age and local context.

Impact

The impact of RE teaching at Hunslet Moor Primary School enables children to develop a thorough understanding of different religions, beliefs, values, and traditions. Pupils learn how religions can shape morality and identity and gain confidence in discussing world religions and religious festivals. They are encouraged to explore their own beliefs, make informed decisions, and show respect and tolerance for the beliefs of others. RE supports positive participation in the school’s diverse community and fosters awareness of others through charitable activities. It also helps children develop a growth mindset, high expectations for their own learning, and a sense that they are valued and that their voice matters within the school community.
