Geography
Geography at Hunslet Moor encourages our children to develop a greater understanding of the world and their place in it.
As the future generation responsible for our planet, we want our pupils to have a sense of respect for the world in which they live.
Intent
Geography at Hunslet Moor Primary School helps children develop a deeper understanding of the world and their place in it, fostering interest in diverse places, people, resources, and environments. Pupils investigate Leeds, the UK, and the wider world to learn about physical and human processes, while exploring the local area builds knowledge of their heritage and what makes Leeds unique. The curriculum encourages children to connect with their environment and with communities both similar and different from their own. Through these experiences, pupils develop an appreciation of diversity and a better understanding of the complex world. Geography supports the school’s aim to embrace, value, and celebrate all cultures represented within the community. Ultimately, the subject nurtures respect for the planet and prepares children to engage with opportunities locally, nationally, and globally.
Implementation
At the start of each Geography unit, children review prior learning and share what they already know, supporting knowledge retention and progression. Knowledge organisers are provided for each unit, containing key facts, questions, and vocabulary to aid learning and serve as a reference at school and home. Carefully selected geographical resources, educational visits, local fieldwork, and visitors enrich the curriculum and enhance understanding. Cross-curricular links with subjects such as Maths, Writing, and Computing are integrated to deepen learning. Teachers use a range of assessment methods, including Sonar, low-stakes quizzes, and targeted questioning, to accurately evaluate understanding. Assessment informs planning, differentiation, and addresses misconceptions to ensure continuous progress for all pupils.
Impact
Our Geography curriculum will lead pupils to be enthusiastic Geography learners, evidenced in a range of ways, including pupil voice and their work. Upon leaving Hunslet Moor at the end of KS2, our children will know more, understand more and remember more about Geography and the world. They will be motivated and inspired to continue their learning as they progress to secondary school. Children will develop a range of life skills, which they can use and develop beyond school life.
